Facebook and Genealogy

Facebook and Genealogy

Never thought much about Facebook being a source of genealogy. Well actually it isn't. What it can be is a way to connect with people who might know something, have sources, done something or if you are lucky be related to you.

In my search for information on Louis Radlof and Clarence Radloff, I came across two Facebook pages of interest.

The first is Meuse-Argonne.com  a FB page dedicated to the battle.  After only being on here for about 3 weeks I learned or obtained the following:
  1. The AEF Resources Map by Weldon Hoppe. Weldon has plotted all of the Griffin photos and Burial Plats on a GIS system that was helpful in finding Louis' initial burial site.
  2. Randal Gaulke shared his blog which had information on researching WWI photographs.
  3. Ronald Cossee who shared his blog on the U.S. cemeteries in France. He then shared  copies of the History of the American Grave Registration Service along with excellent copies of the photos in the history and what appears to be an unpublished manuscript of Maj Gen North who played a major role in the WWI and WWII cemeteries.
The second page is the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial FB page dedicated to the cemetery. For the past several weeks, Bruce Malone the Superintendent has been posting daily pictures of the cemetery as he does his morning rounds of the now closed facility due to the COVID-19 'confinement/quarantine' as he calls it. Today, he posted a picture of Louis Radlof's grave site.

So don't discount Facebook as a way to get in touch with other researchers or subject matter experts.
